WAQANKI (Quechua expression that means "You will cry")

After one of several military expeditions of the Inca armies and during a recognition ceremony for the officers, one royal princess falls in love with the handsome warrior leading the victorious parade.

Love blossoms between this two socially incompatible actors, until the monarch notices such forbidden relationship and forced by the impertinence of this soldier, the Inca condemns him to death. Anguished by such extreme measure the princess intercedes for her lovers life. The Inca is touched and forgives him, but silently orders him to lead a small troupe into the most difficult part of the Amazon jungle knowing before hand that no return is possible from this unconquered and dangerous zone.

When the princess finds out of her lovers impossible mission, she runs after his tracks crying.... and wherever her tears fell an orchid emerged, since then this beautiful flowers are called Waqanki.

DESCRIPTION

The denominated project Waqanki consists in the design of a Botanical Garden in the Historical Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, same that would make works of investigation the biodiversity and biology of the flora, restitution of the endemic and typical flora of the Sanctuary, the execution of studies applied to biodiversity. Establishment of an ecotourism program, environmental education, among others in the interpretation center that would be established.


LOCATION

The Botanical Garden Waqanki would be located in the Department of Cusco, Province of Urubamba, Aguas Calientes District in km 112,5 of the railroad line in the left margin of the river in the premises of the abandoned museum of site and its surrounding areas.

 

MISSION

The University La Molina, in joint venture with University San Antonio Abbad of Cusco and Proyecto Génesis will constitute the Botanical Garden "Waqanki" as a center of interpretation, training, qualification, and investigation initiative that could be replicated in other Protected areas

  • Protection of species danger of extinction.
  • Propagation in vitro for the repopulation of natural habitats.
  • Reproduction of species in its natural habitat and readaptation of those depredated species.
  • Investigation and sustainable use of natural resources of the Sanctuary.
  • Evaluation of the environmental impact.
  • Environmental education.
  • Generation of economic resources

VISION

The Historical Sanctuary of Machu Picchu is protected within the aspect of biodiversity having developed exhaustive investigations referring to the composition of the flora and the fauna, establishing programs of conservation of native germplasm. The Sanctuary is an area where the fundaments of sustenaible development are being fulfilled as well as the Master Plan presented to UNESCO.

 

BACKGROUND

Proyecto Génesis S.A. is a joint-stock company dedicated to the processing and analysis of ecoturísticos projects in the national scope and of protection to the biodiversity. Their members are: Washington Galiano Sanchez (Botanical), Luis Poirier García Godos (Ecoturismo) and Marcelo Deville Gondonneau (Economia).

Next the antecedents of the Waqanki Project are detailed.

At beginnings of year 1994, PROFONANPE summons to an aid for the processing of projects that have a high positive impact in Protected Natural Areas in aspects of Biotecnología and Ecoturismo. In June of the same year the evaluation committee issues a favorable ruling for Génesis Project in which it recommends our proposal to be considered in high-priority form to be financed through the mechanism of conversion of bilateral debt.
